Youth Orchestra

Our orchestra is broken down into three sessions and meet on Tuesdays at West Homer Elementary School. They are mixed ensembles of cellos, basses, violins and violas. These groups are designed for students to have fun playing together while learning orchestral skill and improving note reading ability.

Overture Strings

This class provides the next stage for students entering third grade and who participated in the school-based violin program at either Fireweed or Paul Banks Elementary. It is a logical continuation of similar instruction.

The first semester is offered at no cost to overture strings students and there are a few instruments available as loaners.

Students must be taking private lessons and have their own instrument. We can help find both a teacher and an instrument for you. Financial aid is available for both private lessons and HYSOC class fees.

We believe that great music education should be accessible to every child.

Students rehearse once a week through the school year and have opportunities to perform in various venues in the community. While the preparation of music for performances is one goal of rehearsals, it is not the sole purpose of our time in class. The emphasis of the group is to develop ensemble playing skills, increase sight reading skills, and develop a cooperative spirit where every player realizes their importance to the whole.

The goals of this orchestra include enhanced ensemble skills with an emphasis on cooperation, increased ease of sight-reading and rhythmic skills, and engendering a sense of pride in the group as a whole.
